Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEPA) | About and Contact Info

The Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEPA) was the primary environmental regulatory agency in Nigeria established by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency Act of 1988. However, as of last update in January 2022, FEPA has been replaced by the Federal Ministry of Environment (FME) and other specialized agencies responsible for environmental protection and management in Nigeria.
The Federal Ministry of Environment (FME) now oversees environmental protection policies, regulations, and enforcement activities at the federal level in Nigeria. The ministry is responsible for coordinating environmental programs, implementing pollution control measures, and promoting sustainable development practices across various sectors of the economy.
Some key functions and responsibilities of the Federal Ministry of Environment include:
- Policy Formulation and Implementation: The ministry formulates environmental policies and guidelines to address key environmental issues, such as pollution control, waste management, biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development.
- Regulatory Oversight: The ministry regulates and monitors environmental activities, including industrial operations, waste disposal practices, air and water quality standards, and environmental impact assessments. It ensures compliance with environmental regulations and enforces penalties for environmental violations.
- Environmental Assessment and Monitoring: The ministry conducts environmental assessments, surveys, and monitoring programs to evaluate the state of the environment, identify environmental risks and challenges, and develop strategies for environmental management and conservation.
- Public Awareness and Education: The ministry engages in public awareness campaigns, education programs, and community outreach initiatives to raise awareness about environmental issues, promote environmental stewardship, and encourage sustainable lifestyle practices among the public.
- International Cooperation and Collaboration: The ministry collaborates with international organizations, donor agencies, and foreign governments to address transboundary environmental issues, access funding for environmental projects, and participate in global environmental initiatives and agreements.
- Capacity Building and Training: The ministry invests in capacity-building initiatives, training programs, and professional development opportunities for environmental practitioners, government officials, and stakeholders involved in environmental management and conservation.
- Research and Innovation: The ministry supports research and innovation in environmental science, technology, and policy to develop solutions to environmental challenges, improve environmental monitoring and assessment methods, and enhance sustainable development practices.
While the Federal Ministry of Environment assumes many of the functions previously carried out by FEPA, Nigeria also has other specialized agencies and departments responsible for specific aspects of environmental protection and management, such as the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) and the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN). These agencies work collaboratively to address environmental issues and promote environmental sustainability in Nigeria.
