The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs in Nigeria is a governmental agency tasked with promoting gender equality, empowering women, and advocating for women’s rights and welfare across the country. It works towards addressing issues such as gender-based violence, economic empowerment, education, health, and political participation for women.

Key Functions:

  1. Policy Formulation: The ministry formulates policies and strategies aimed at advancing the rights and well-being of women and girls in Nigeria. These policies focus on addressing gender disparities, promoting women’s empowerment, and mainstreaming gender considerations across government programs and initiatives.
  2. Gender Mainstreaming: It promotes gender mainstreaming in national development planning and implementation processes to ensure that the needs, priorities, and perspectives of women are integrated into policies, programs, and projects across sectors. This includes advocating for gender-responsive budgeting and monitoring to advance gender equality goals.
  3. Women’s Empowerment: The ministry implements programs and projects aimed at empowering women economically, socially, and politically. This includes initiatives such as skills training, entrepreneurship development, access to credit and finance, and support for women’s leadership and participation in decision-making processes.
  4. Gender-Based Violence Prevention: It works to prevent and respond to gender-based violence (GBV) by raising awareness, providing support services for survivors, and advocating for stronger legal frameworks and policies to address GBV. The ministry collaborates with relevant stakeholders to enhance coordination and capacity-building in GBV prevention and response efforts.
  5. Health and Education: The ministry promotes women’s access to quality healthcare services, including maternal and reproductive health care, family planning, and HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. It also advocates for girls’ education and supports initiatives to improve access to education and reduce gender disparities in school enrollment and retention.
